MAINA KAGENI IN THE MORNING!..
I wonder how life would be in Kenya without the sights and sounds of our one and
only radio presenter, the legendary Maina Kageni. This free-spirited Kenyan has been in our ears for decades, chatting up the nation at the crack of dawn, while hosting his infamous morning show in the Classic 105 FM radio station, on some of the most controversial topics that have prudes hiding behind curtain walls, Kibaki style.
But seriously, who in this nation does not
know of a Maina Kageni? If sanguine was a person, then Maina would be that
person, embodying the vibe of a free spirit, with a infectious laughter, and an
outspoken personality that kind of reminds me of me. Better yet, I do believe
that Maina and I are kindred spirits, because of our talkative nature, whereby
it is always sunshine, rainbows, and unicorns floating around our comical heads,
giving us a sunny disposition. That explains why he cannot seem to stop
laughing on his popular show.
Well, granted that Maina is more talkative
than I am. Actually, Maina would talk everybody under the table and wring their
ears off. But this is not necessarily a bad thing either, as this quality has
made him a mainstay on our local airwaves. Moreover, there is not a topic in
this world that Maina is not privy to or has not discussed on radio, and does
not shy away either, conversating on some of the most sordid issues to ever be
discussed on the history of radio.
One thing is clear, that this Maina man does
not have a shy bone in his body. That is why he is paid to do what he does and
he does it arguably well. Just when you would think that fellow Kenyans would
be up in arms, to defend their virgin ears from Maina’s colossal rhetoric in
public spaces, it turns out that we are his biggest fans. Almost every matatu
and shuttle is always attuned to the popular morning show, while they ferry both
employers and employees to their respected places of work.
You should see the uncomfortable reactions
on people’s faces, when Maina dives into the meat of the scandalous topic of
the hour, touching on the most sensitive of subjects, while daring bold Kenyans
to call in and chime over the same racy issues. I, for one, pretend to be asleep
in a Rembo shuttle, while trying my level best to get into the Nairobi city
centre, with my righteousness intact.
By the way, is it just me or the morning
traffic jams are scheduled on purpose to go slow, just when Maina decides to turn
up the heat on us, with his unapologetic truth about women wearing the pants in
most of our homes? It in that moment of inertia, under the traffic lights, when
Maina decided to take a jab at our poor men, for loosing their proverbial pants
within their relationships, shocking the mess out of everyday people, causing
them to want to run and hide behind the conductor’s sit. But trust Maina to
come through with the tea or whisky, however he prefers.
And who better to co-host the highly anticipated
morning show, other than the highly acclaimed comedian himself, the one and
only Mwalimu King’ang’i, also known as Churchill, who brings the funny into the
show, cracking everyone up with his healthy banter. There is never a dull
moment, where these two great Kenyans are, for they are healthy pair, in a perfect
bromance, of which I am always elated.
Maina Kangeni has the gift of voice, with Many
brands, both local and international have tapped into his gift and use his
voice for commercials, which he is well compensated for. Nonetheless, beyond
the skills and talents of this extrovert, lies a generous and a giving heart,
and perhaps one of his most noble of traits that make his fellow citizens, both
young and old, to love and appreciate him.
There is nothing really good or bad that
Maina would be scared to voice out, for he has lived long enough to understand
that freedom comes in speaking the truth, even if that truth is hard to hear or
face. Maina has also worked hard to be where he is today, and appreciates the
fact that nothing good in life comes easy. Finally, Maina’s bubbly persona is a
reflection of his true self, a testament of who he is to the core. These are
the makings Maina Kageni.
Here is to you Maina Kageni; make everyday
count, live today like there is no tomorrow, honour the people that love you, cherish
those that made you, make the change when you need to, and pray that you live
out your best life in the years to come.
