APOSTLE RICHARD E.S. TAKIM; THE VOICE OF REASON FOR THE ENDTIME CHURCH

APOSTLE RICHARD E.S. TAKIM; THE VOICE OF REASON FOR THE ENDTIME CHURCH

As we kick off the last day of this exciting black history month, I would like to finish strong by honouring this man of God, who has served the people of Kenya, by offering us spiritual guidance, through educating us on sound biblical doctrines, as well as proclaiming the Word of God without fear or failure. This is a spiritual father that is revered in all public circles, yet equally respected by many for his passion and dedication to our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ the King.

Apostle Richard E.S. Takim, who is the Apostolic Leader of The Cry of the Spirit Ministries, located in our beautiful capital city of Nairobi, is a man of God who has worked hard to transform the spiritual lives of many a people in this great nation. Granted that he may not be a Kenyan by right of birth, however he is much a Kenyan by God’s vision, mission, and purpose for the future of Kenya. That is why he is an inspiration to many who have had the privilege of sitting under his tutelage, as pertains to matters of the Kingdom of God.

Apostle Richard Takim does not need any introduction, as he has braced the airwaves in the nation, persistently and consistently ministering the Word of God to all and sundry. Everyday of the week, the Apostolic Leader embraces his  missionary purpose of proclaiming God’s Word in spirit and in truth, especially to those that have a higher calling in God. Moreover, Apostle Takim is officially a Kenyan resident since 2013, with the sole purpose of winning souls to Christ, with the truth of God’s Word and the power of His resurrection. This general of God does not play with this assignment either, taking it to heart and mind, making it his priority to teach, preach, prophesy, as well as impart his congregants with the message of hope, truth, and life, until they fully transform by God’s saving grace, in order to become who God has called them to be.

In all my years as a Christian, I have never understood the holy Bible like I do now, ever since I started tuning into the faith building programmes and devotionals by Apostle Takim, on his Morning Cloud Television Channel. There is no doubt that the preacher man has fully tapped into the wisdom of God in the Bible, by the way he easily dissects into it and exhumes its power. Surely, such knowledge exuded by this messenger of God is not ordinary, and therefore cannot be ignored. Therefore, any serious Christian would be most lucky and blessed to tune into the Morning Cloud Television, should they desire a more vibrant spiritual life.

But the most compelling move I have observed from Apostle Takim, is the masterful delivery of his sermons. When this noteworthy pastor stands to preach the Word of God at the pulpit, best believe that you will not remain the same. Of course, The Almighty God is always at work behind the scenes, working alongside his humble servant, yet his word knowledge, life experience, combined together with his passion for God’s people makes up for a powerful impact, particularly in the lives of individuals. Kenyans do not know how favoured they are to be braced with such a selfless missionary.

Granted that there are many teachers and preachers of various titles in the nation, busy working in the name of God, who definitely deserve recognition for their numerous contributions for our spiritual growth. I take this moment to appreciate you all for your continued support of our well being as Christians. May the good Lord bless you all. Nonetheless, this timeless piece goes out to this modest spiritual father, whose mission has changed many lives, transforming them into an army of fire brand soldiers, holy and acceptable to the Lord our Saviour, for the work allotted to His saints in these end times.

I hereby urge all Kenyans to make a point of tuning in to the Morning Cloud Television for excerpts of the sermons overseen by the earnest Apostle Takim, if only to increase in your faith, as well as improve your walk and talk with God. Moreover, there are several books authored by the pastor, which are beneficial to your Christian growth. Thus, I kindly suggest that you purchase them too. To conclude, Apostle Takim is one of a kind soldier of Christ, whose vision is heavenly-based on reaping souls for the kingdom of God, whose  content is based on sound biblical doctrine, whose ministry is five-fold, whose character is pure, and whose commission is upholding the truth of the gospel.

Here is to you Apostle Richard E.S. Takim; If the Lord said it, who are we to disagree? If the Lord birthed it, who are we to destroy it? If the Lord called you, who are we to doubt Him?, and if the Lord sent you, who are we to say otherwise? Therefore, as you have heeded the clarion call and stepped into your calling, also ride high on eagles wings, and into your awaited destiny.

BERNADETTE RESIAN LOLOJU; THE ANTI-FGM CRUSADER

BERNADETTE RESIAN LOLOJU; THE ANTI-FGM CRUSADER

As we wind close to the end of this beautiful black history month, we cannot forget to celebrate Kenyans in the frontline, fighting for human rights and freedoms in all aspects of the society, and one such notable individual is an active social worker by the name of Bernadette Resian Loloju, who has for decades been championing the rights of the female child, through the anti-female genital mutilation campaign, which seeks to end female circumcision within the nation, and more so, the African continent as a whole. Ms. Bernadette carries this cause to heart, having won many battles to this effect, while striving to accomplish many more, in effect to eradicating this barbaric traditional practice.

No one would have served as a better Chief Executive Officer of the anti-FGM Board than one Ms. Bernadette Loloju. This is because she has been a victim of this cruel act of botchulising female private areas, for the sake of keeping up with ancient traditions. That is why she understands the pain, as well as the adverse effects of FGM in the life of a young innocent girl, whose only crime was to be born a female. As a result, Ms. Loloju has dedicated her life to confronting this evil that plagues the female child within the society, hence I would not trust another soul with this noble mission, other than Madam Bernadette Loloju.

For decades, Bernadette has made it her soul mission to traverse across the country and even beyond our boarders, in order to have critical conversations with regards to eradicating FGM in our society, with the various communities that still hold on to this heinous practice of FGM. Moreover, she targets local leaders, the elders, as well as all the stakeholders within all affected communities, for she knows just how important they are in, either making or breaking the malignant vice at play. Furthermore, Bernadette understands that the battle is at the grassroots, thus she has to adjust her perspective, so as to target this crucial level field, if she wants victory over this vicious epidemic.

The saddest part of this brutal practice of FGM is that the elderly women, who are also victims of this uncouth malpractice, serve as the gate-keepers of this sick tradition. I am of the notion that, should all women, mostly mothers, stand up against this cultural abuse, then the patriarchs will have no choice but to abandon this chauvinistic custom of mutilating girls. Ms. Bernadette equally understands this, and therefore makes it her business to have a solid discourse particularly with rural uneducated women, in order to influence their view on not allowing their girl-children to get circumcised.

But where does the Church stand as far as FGM is concerned? Should not their voice be louder than the government’s voice, as far as human rights are concerned? How is it that most of the congregants are circumcised right under the heavy influence of the Church, yet there is no uproar from them? All I ever witness from the Church is a deafening silence and a multitude of chirping crickets, when it comes to this troubling issue. Christianity is all about setting people free from the shackles of spiritual, physical, mental, and even slavery, however the Church is mum, while engaging in other activities.

Clearly, there is so much to be done, in order to achieve this goal of eradicating this archaic practice of FGM. We all need to chip in however we can, to ensure that no girls are mutilated before our eyes, as well as under our watch. Firstly, all parents with female children, should be at the forefront of this war, protecting their girls by not allowing such primitive traditions to ruin the lives of their children. Secondly, our government should enact tough laws that combats this traditional negligence, by placing a hefty penalties to any of its offender. This is a more powerful way of rendering FGM to be entirely obsolete. Last but not least, the Church should take charge of this negative tradition, through condemning FGM with the strongest of terms, by ex-communicating Church members who engage in such inhumane actions.

Ms. Bernadette Loloju is determined to take this FGM fight to all the local, national, and even international pivotal stakeholders, if only to save the young innocent girls from this criminal act of genital mutilation. Nevertheless, she cannot do it alone, and therefore needs you and I to lend helping hands, whether it be financial or spiritual help, any help will do, not only to combat this lingering problem but also put it to rest permanently, once and for all.

Here is to you Bernadette Resian Loloju; what you do for those underprivileged female folk is not only noble but benevolent, for it takes a woman of strength, courage and wisdom to be dedicated to upholding human rights. May the Good Lord bless the work of your hands.

FRED OBACH MACHOKA; THE RHUMBA CONNOISSEUR

FRED OBACH MACHOKA; THE RHUMBA CONNOISSEUR

This black history month segment goes out to the blackest man in black Africa, the most incomparable commercial broadcaster, the African music connoisseur, the veteran journalist and media personality, the soldier with the baritone voice, the total man himself, Uncle Fred Obachi Machoka. This famous radio host has for years been busy captivating the whole nation entertained with his enchanting Rogaroga show, spinning some of the most spell-binding rhumba hits, which leave his numerous fans completely hooked to his magic show, and craving some more of it. Moreover, his ability to infuse life into African music, is very inspirational, such that many become addicted to listening to it more and more.

Uncle Fred has been in our ears since the eighties, with two of his most recognized skills namely, commercial broadcasting and show-hosting, which have made him a household name. Additionally, his booming voice is made for sales and marketing, of which Fred is a walking billboard of advertisements, known to influence the sale of various products, using his starry voice, his sunny disposition, together with his larger than life personality. As a result, product companies rush in, to ride on Fred’s energetic bandwagon, with their brands in tow, fully convinced that this voice master is skilled enough to deliver success to them.

Who remembers Sanyo products? This Fred guy made most of us buy Sanyo televisions and radios on hire purchase, during the eighties. How about the Sportsman Ni Sawa Hasa! advertisement? That was a pre-recorded cigarette advertisement, with Fred’s informative voice all over it. What of the Eveready Paka Power Premium batteries? Yes, when it comes to product sales and promotions, no one does it better than the cool uncle Fred. The woke generation may not be privy to the aforementioned products, as they may be obsolete, therefore not available on the online market, where they mostly frequent. However, back in the analogue days, uncle Fred was a one-stop shop of a myriad of brand sales, a phenomenon that continues up to date.

Truly, it seems that there is never a dull moment in Fred’s world, as the guy steps into the studio with music on his mind and fire in his soul. Aside from marketing, uncle Fred is big on popular music shows, such as the ancient Music Time, which aired on the Kenya Broadcasting Cooperation Television, way back when the internet was purely a thought in its inventor’s head. Then along came Sheki Legi music show that aired for a short while, on the Citizen Radio, before uncle Fred developed the most popular music show, by the name Rogaroga, that airs both on Citizen radio and television, which has a huge audience and viewing countrywide.

The Rogaroga show showcases some of the very talented African artists across the continent of Africa but particularly gives special play of Rhumba music, whose origin is from the Democratic Republic of Congo. Uncle Fred is so familiar with this genre of music, such that it is believed that he could have been a Congolese in his past life, just by his knowledge, experience and affiliation of the Rhumba Congo music. Moreover, he pours this knowledge onto his listeners throughout the nation, thereby creating a fun base of both young and old Rhumba lovers.

Besides Rhumba, uncle Fred is big on granting Zilizopendwa class of African music considerate airplay, because it is a set of golden music that is nostalgic and has stood the test of time, with the ability to take one way back into time, in order to reminisce of what was, as well as how it was in those old memorable days. Aside from Rhumba and Zilizopendwa, Fred showcases an array of Zouk and Afro-beat music within his show, which makes him live up to his notable title of the blackest man in black Africa.

Fred Obachi Machoka is many things to many people, yet one thing we all can concur on is his colourful persona, together with his knack for keeping the public entertained with a slew of classic hits that have stood the test of time. From being a General Service Unit soldier, to a commercial broadcaster, and on to being a celebrated radio host, Fred has done it all, with a smile on his face, and at his prime age, he still has a few decades charm us with great music that which will keep us dancing until the chicken come home to roost.

Here is to you Fred Obachi Machoka; wild passion is for boys, great passion is for men but victory passion is for generals like you. May you continue to soar high beyond your wildest dreams.

CAROLINE MUTOKO; THE LEGENDARY CAROLINE

CAROLINE MUTOKO; THE LEGENDARY CAROLINE

Radio personality Caroline Mutoko has been ruling the nation’s airwaves for decades, connecting us to the greatest music hits, highlighting some of the most controversial of topics, while dropping her precious gems of opinions on us, whether we appreciated it or not. Yet, what is most captivating about Caroline is her cut-throat way of being, a straight shooter without apologies or regrets. While this audacious attitude may turn people off, even so I believe that God made Caroline that way, for reasons that will make up for a powerful piece of read on this segment of black history month.

I got to know about Caroline Mutoko back in the nineties, when she did a New Always Ultra infomercial, whereby she spoke of the product in the following manner, “You do feel clean, you do feel dry, and so you just go about your business.” The three things I picked from Caroline in this throw back Always commercial was her accent, confidence, and her sense of style. Back then, Caroline was a rising star, carving a niche for herself, perhaps not aware of the kind of influence she would yield in the future. I am yet to see or hear a female in Kenya that can match Caroline’s energy of being bold and a straight shooter. I am sure that there are plenty of brazen females but they could be fire crackers, compared to Caroline’s dynamite disposition, for she does not mince her words when she speaks and whatever she says always has an edge of finality. However, this is not to say that Caroline is too rigid to respect the beliefs of others, though you have to convince her otherwise.

I heard Caroline once say to her mentees that, If you have an average mentality, everything you do or possess will be average, from your house, job, friends, ideas, and possibly even your partner in life. Well, that sounds a bit of a stretch and many would argue and say that there is nothing wrong with being average but Caroline disagrees. According to her, you attract who you are, a harsh reality which many like to runaway from. Nonetheless, I begrudgingly agree with her. It takes a lot of shadow work on a personal level, in order to move from average to great, and while it sounds achievable, not many are willing to venture into unchartered territory, afraid of the gory skeletons within that they would wish want to hide from or pretend that they do not exist.

It is for this reason that many view Caroline as fierce and somewhat cocky but trust chauvinistic males, as well as embittered females to give their unsolicited opinions about strong personalities they cannot conquer or destroy. Moreover, it is always intense animosity with such a group of low vibrational beings, who seek to pull down powerful individuals, with their crabs in a bucket mentality, unaware that it is God’s will for His creation to be diverse. Besides, you cannot compete where do not compare, therefore remedial treatment or therapy is necessary for one’s growth and progression in life. So, enough with the harsh judgements about the people you deem unlikable. Instead, take off the rose-coloured glasses, and learn to accept people for who they are.

All in all, I do admire the beautiful complexities that constitute one Caroline Mutoko. In my humble opinion, she is one of a kind and needs to remain that way, for there are not many functioning individuals that possess her rare qualities. Firstly, she is not cut from the Kenya uniform cloth, of following the leader and his marching band. Instead, Caroline follows her wits and guts, something that has made her a cut above the rest.

Similarly, her ability to speak her mind without fear or failure, is another quality I esteem about Caroline. Unlike her, I can be cat, sometimes overly thinking about what is best for society’s image, rather than what is best for me. I can bet you that I am not the only one in this quagmire, for we are many who care what others think about us but not Caroline. You see, she overcame this fear, by challenging herself to step out of the matrix and see view herself in her own standard, outside of the already critical society.

Many say that Caroline is too stern to be a wife, who is subservient to a man. First of all, Caroline is a mother of two, meaning she is loving, caring, nurturing, contrary to popular belief. Secondly, I believe that Caroline would make a good wife, especially at her age, where she has a vantage point of being mature enough to handle the responsibilities of being a wife. Let God send in a great man her way, and watch to see if she will not play her role exceedingly well. Thirdly, Caroline is yet to find a man, with whom she can let loose and be vulnerable with. With such a bold type of woman, you need the right kind of man to match her values. The problem is that there are not many alphas with right kind of Leo energy to balance the scales with Caroline. Nevertheless, I do believe that it is just a matter of time before one such man appears in Caroline’s life, and change the course of history.

Here is to you Caroline Mutoko; you are a rare breed, a precious seed, refined, and unattainable. So, walk and talk like it, relentless of your blest root. There are not many like you, and not many can become you. You are one in a million. A golden breed indeed.

DR. YUSUF K. DAWOOD; THE PROLIFIC SURGEON

DR. YUSUF K. DAWOOD; THE PROLIFIC SURGEON

Renowned surgeon, columnist, and author the late Yusuf K. Dawood kept us riveted on our seats for decades, with his detailed narratives of his work as a surgeon, on his popular Daily Nation’s column entitled, Surgeon’s Diaries, which lasted for over thirty years. As a result, this prolific surgeon is worth an honorary mention in this captivating segment of black history month.

The late Dr. Dawood was a medicine practitioner for sixty years, having worked at the Aga Khan Hospital in Nairobi, with a specialty in breast cancer. Additionally, he was not only a doctor, but also an attending physician, a writer, a husband, and a father. I always wonder just how this gifted surgeon was able to juggle all the above mentioned roles? Dr. Dawood must have led a busy life, trying to find balance between obligation and passion, in order to find success. Be that as it may, I am on the notion that doctors always record or document their research studies in medical journals. Regardless, Dr. Dawood went a step further, by giving us detailed accounts about his everyday patients, their heartfelt emotions, and their journeys to recovery after undergoing surgery, without necessarily revealing their identity, or penning the gory details of the surgical procedures.

As a teenager, I spent most of my reading time keeping up with the Surgeon’s Diaries, sometimes getting lost through the reads, on account of the medical jargon, yet I always caught the gist of what the famous doctor was trying to drive across. The diaries almost had a feel of relief by the end of every story, mostly because of the success stories that Dr. Dawood wrote about. In spite of that, it was not always bread and roses in the surgeon’s theatre, as some tales had a sense of defeat or despair at the end, proving that life and death is a delicate dance of the cosmos.

Nonetheless, Dr. Dawood knew how to deliver a timeless piece, without making it too grim, for he knew that he had some sensitive devotees like me, who would sob their eyes out, should he have chosen to recount on the worst case scenarios he had dealt with, during the course of his medical practice. However, I must say that it is because of such a gifted writer as Dr. Dawood, that I was inspired to become one.

As a doctor, and particularly one who had encountered death on several occasions, as part of his occupational hazard, Dr. Dawood was brave enough to stand tall even in the face of demise, believing that he was able to help his patients gain a clean bill of health amidst tough situations. Even so, we are already informed about the ills of cancer and how it is detrimental to one’s health. Consequently, annual screening is imperative for everyone these days, in order to avoid a late diagnosis, when this cancerous monster has eaten up all your good body cells, leaving you sick and helpless. This was Dr. Dawood’s regular counsel to us all.

On first glance, one would not  recognize the late Dr. Dawood as the prominent surgeon and author, due to his polite and humble demeanour. Infact, the only images I saw of the noble doctor back then were those cartoons depicted of him in every article, by the popular illustrator John Nyaga, who worked with Dr. Dawood for more than a decade, in order to bring his master pieces to life. Back then, we did not have google images to help us identify our traditional heroes in a jiff, wherefore we relied heavily on the notable John Nyaga to draw for us images of those famed unidentified artists. So, thank you John Nyaga for your exemplary gift of drawing. But I quickly digress.

The late Dr. Yusuf K. Dawood was an inspiration to many Kenyans, and particularly those with the desire to study medicine. He also inspired his patients to live out their remaining days focusing on the positive aspect of life, living in gratitude, as well as appreciating close friends and family. This is what Dr. Yusuf K. Dawood valued most in life, and thereby being confident in the fact that when he too transitions into the next life, he will have lived what he taught. Oh, and incase you were wondering what the initial K stood for, in the doctor’s name, it is Kodwavwalla. Go figure! Now, you all know.

Here is to you Dr. Yusuf K. Dawood; a precious gem trickled in the ink of time, to spread healing, as well as colour our world with peace, love, and happiness. You will be dearly missed. Rest in power!

LUPITA AMONDI NYONG’O; OUR BELOVED NUBIAN STAR

LUPITA AMONDI NYONG’O; OUR BELOVED NUBIAN STAR

Black history month would not feel complete without giving mention to our star rise, the blissful Hollywood empress, the most critically acclaimed academy award-winning actress, Ms. Lupita Amondi Nyong’o, who is strutting her way on to the Hollywood walk of fame, while carrying our national flag on high, thereby making us all the more proud to be Kenyan. What’s more, it is her beauty, wit, talent, grace, confidence, and artistry that had many inspired to venture into the unknown and dare to live out their dreams.

For those of you who may not have a clue as to who this damsel is, well let me expound her identity, for your information. Lupita Amondi Nyong’o is an academy award winning actress, with numerous movies to her credit, a career to wish for, and fame to die for. This means that she has a golden statue accorded to her, when she won the best supporting actress category in the famous movie, twelves years a slave. It does not get better than bagging an Oscar award, testifying that one has made it to the top of the mountain, and our beautiful Lupita delightfully got us there. I mean, the kind of hard work and dedication that goes into attaining such an achievement is absolutely mind-blowing but when you have the dexterity and grace to pull it off like Lupita does, then it becomes a glorious walk in the park.

Nevertheless, do not take my word for it. Rather, do some personal research on all the projects, which this Oscar superstar has been involved in and I bet you that Lupita is not only a gifted actress but equally has the finesse and conviction to be on the top tier of the very best entertainers. Granted that there are some contributing factors which have favoured this Nubian queen to be elevated into stardom on the big screen, a major one being that she has always been priviledged and therefore, it is not farfetched to believe that she can be anything other than a shining star. Yet, in her defence, I would say that Lupita has earned her stripes in order to get into to the golden doors of Hollywood.

Despite being born with a silver spoon, this mega actress has the ability to make impact with her skills and talents. Besides, there are numerous people born of wealth and are of star quality, who have not been fortunate enough to live out their Hollywood dreams. Perhaps they were not driven enough to achieve their aspirations, and by that have their wish fulfilment or maybe they were not purposed to walk this Hollywood path, who knows? Speaking of which, I do believe that Lupita was meant to be an actress, an entertainer, and Hollywood her turf.

Being of African descent is another likely determinant, which has made the beautiful Lupita a mainstay on the silver screen. Diversity is a major game changer in Hollywood today, whereby foreign actors are high on demand and consequently make for a box office hit. We may conclude that with this diversity factor, luck is on Lupita’s side but in Hollywood, you need more than luck in order to stay relevant and busy working. Therefore, the question is not so much about one’s race or nationality, rather it is about one’s ability to deliver on a film project. Afterall, show business is all about making money, and for this reason, if production companies are able to profit off your exotic looks, then this translates as more money for them, and equally more power to you.

The ability to showcase a star-studded performance, is yet another element that has made Lupita Nyong’o a household name. The valid question is, as an actor or actress, are you able to; entertain and captivate the audience, to influence and make memorable impact; pull in the cheese, and leave a legacy? If you made it to the Oscars, and even received a golden statue for a reward, chances are that your performance was deemed to be starlet, and thus worthy of honour. I do believe that Lupita is a masterful artist that combines talent, experience, emotions, as well as craft in order to bring forth a starling performance.

To conclude, there is no limit to Lupita’s master craft. She has proven to the world many times that she has what it takes to be great performer, despite her age, race, nationality, or creed. As a result, her name will remain in the sands of time, as one of the most celebrated African women to have left an imprint in entertainment history.

Here is to you Lupita Amondi Nyong’o; as you progress in your power, let life be your teacher, let time be your healer, and let God be your centre.

DANIEL TOROITICH ARAP MOI: BABA MOI

DANIEL TOROITICH ARAP MOI: BABA MOI

The most renowned and most decorated statesman known in Kenyan; whose fame is eminent the world over, known to have instilled unnatural fear into the hearts of his opponents, prominent for having built a lasting family dynasty, whose name is in almost every recognized institution within the nation, whose legacy is subjoined to his long-serving presidency, who is famously known as Baba Moi, Mzee Moi, or Nyayo, the total man himself, the late President Daniel Toroitich Arap Moi, CGH. On this portion of black history month, I get to examine the life and times of our beloved Baba Moi, as one key leader that changed the course of this nation, during his tenure as president.

Aside from the late president Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe, and president Paul Biya of Cameroon, the late Mzee Moi was one of the longest serving presidents of Africa, having been in the seat of power for twenty four solid years, and would have served even longer, had the constitution not barred him from seeking another term in office. Despite of him having the will, energy, and stamina to continue on with the role as the president, the winds of political and economic change came blowing on his turf, compelling Baba Moi to hang up his spurs, and proceed to an early retirement. Fortunately for him, he had the foresight to the pre-eminent development, and thus was wise enough to accept the voice of  change, pass the baton to his successor, and humbly exit the political arena.

Nonetheless, Baba Moi was no ordinary man. Some allegedly said that his political baton, commonly known as fimbo ya Nyayo, contained in it mystical powers, while others jived that he was clairvoyant, with the ability to clearly see and also hear rivals plotting against him. I heard plenty of these claims in rumourville, during my childhood days, growing up in the eighties, at the height of the Nyayo era. I grew up listening to many more of these rumours that cannot be ratified, neither confirmed in this write up. Yet, who is to say that Mzee did not possess the aforementioned psychic abilities? Perhaps they were imparted upon him by God Almighty, as he was known to be very spiritual and a practicing Christian. But who knows?

However, the late Mzee Moi could not have been ordinary and run a country for two decades. It must have required him to attain special skills, in order to lead a crop of Kenyans, who then were modern, well-educated, fiercely independent, largely democratic, big on human rights, as well as desiring of socio-economic and political freedom. No longer was it business as usual, when Kenyans started demanding for changes to be made in every public sphere during the Nyayo era, not fearing the grave consequences that came along with openly defying the Moi government. It is because of the bravery of these that we now enjoy multi-party democracy, amongst other myriad of blessings.

Nevertheless, what of those blissful memories that Baba Moi left behind for us to remember him by, and forever immortalize in our hearts? Granted that some people are not fond of the former president and thus have no regard for him as such, yet there are a couple of blessed echoes about the former president that I hold dear in my heart. Firstly, the Nyayo era brought on free milk for public school children to have twice a week. I was a beneficiary of this gift of milk in the eighties and early nineties, thanks to Mzee Moi, who valued school children enough to ensure that they had enough protein within their systems, so as to function in class.

Furthermore, how about the unforgettable folk songs that were famously performed on all public holidays? Do you not experience nostalgia, whenever you listen to them? Well, they were mostly about Baba Moi but they were also classic patriotic songs that reminded us of how great this nation is. Whenever I get to listen to the sounds of Muungano Choir, I am always reminded of Baba Moi, as this too was his favourite choir. Moreover, all of their beautiful songs they performed for us will forever be etched into my memory. By the way, what happened to this celebrated choir? Someone please, let us on the whereabouts of this glorious choristers.

The late Mzee Moi will forever be in our hearts and minds, more so because he purposed to leave his memorabilia all over the country, from his statues, his photos, his signature, to his legendary name that embodies every famous path, street, road, highway, bridge, school, hospital, and institution. Indeed, with your evocation all around us, we can never ever forget you.

Here is to you Daniel Toroitich Arap Moi; your memory will live on in our hearts and minds. Rest in power!

ORIE ROGO MANDULI: THE ENCHANTING BLACK SWAN

THE ENCHANTING BLACK SWAN

There is not a Kenyan, dead or alive, known to possess the exuberant qualities of being a duly queen, like our one and only rare jewel of glitz and glamour, the late Mary Orie Rogo Manduli. Kenya would not be considered as great, without the presence of this past prima donna, whose entire existence was full of beauty, colour, pizzazz, music, a ray of fashion and of course a slew of diva moments, making her both an inspiration and a qualifier on this special portion of black history month.

The late Orie Rogo Manduli was one in million rare kind of breed, who was unstoppable when it came to being the ultimate black swan. At sixteen, she was crowned Miss Kenya, while competing in a beauty pageant. She was equally the first Kenyan woman participant in the East African Safari Rally, in the year 1974. Additionally, Orie was the first woman to head the National Council of NGO’s in Kenya, a position she held before her timely passing. In her youthful days, Orie worked with the Kenya Railways, the Coffee Board of Kenya, and was a once upon a time host on the Mambo Leo show, which was transmitted by the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation.

We can concur that the late Orie was high maintenance, and extremely arduous to keep up with. She was a woman of a high standard, so very bold and unapologetic of her expensive ways, that even I was perplexed at her epic lifestyle. Yet, Orie was not complex at all. Infact, she was simple to read and easy to get along with, if you understood her from the notion of self love, backed up with a high self esteem. You see, the late Orie was overly confident in who she was, and thus did not need anyone to determine her worth. Furthermore, how she felt on the inside, reflected much on how she moved the outside, for she projected much strength, power, grace, and beauty, a testament to how she felt about herself.

What’s more, that popular catch phrase the late Orie loved to quote over our heads that, if you have it, then flaunt it but if you do not have it, humbly camouflage it, was a philosophy she lived by, and encouraged many to also embrace in their lives. Moreover, her colourful words were overt, sunny, expressive, and non-judgmental. Orie was not the kind to tear people down with her words but preferred to build them up, mostly by uplifting them to enjoy their lives to the fullest. Despite of how tough life must have been for her in the past, Orie never dwelt on her pain or sorrow. Rather, she chose to focus on the sunny side of her and not the rainy side.

I believe that Orie lived in her own bubble and was content in it. There were not many people around her bubble but those that came close can attest to the fact that she was a high vibrational human being, not much bothered by the mundane, and exceedingly musical. Her love for rhumba music was eminent, for she sang and danced when she got the chance to unwind. I think most Africans are into rhumba music, even though we do not know half of the lyrics, as long as mood is right and the tune is captivating. Besides, these Congolese musicians must be wizards on the low, because of how intensely we are addicted to their music. But I swiftly  digress.

An Orie Rogo Manduli story is not complete without the discourse of her taste in fashion. Orie was a true pan-Africanist, channeling her love for Africa into her sense of haute couture. To Orie Rogo Manduli, her image was everything, in that she would never step out of her residence, unless she was in full glam of flawless hair and make up, an African print Kitenge dress, with a matching bag and shoes, while topping it up with her signature gele head gear, which always made her look absolutely stunning.

If I was to sum up the life of Orie Rogo Manduli in one word, I would say splendid or captivating or even superb, as this was one soul that was determined to yolo her life, without fear or regret. Perhaps it was in her nature to live vicariously through life or better yet, she was intentional about the kind of life she wanted to live. All in all, Orie Rogo Manduli lived by example that we should all emulate, for life is too short to be pressured upon by the cares of this world. Therefore, here is a message to you all, live and let live!

Here is to you Mary Orie Rogo Manduli; an African goddess you were, so very enchanting and full of life. May the angels sing and dance alongside you, as you captivate them with you ever presence in the afterlife. Rest in Power!

EUNICE NJAMBI MATHU; THE MEDIA CONSORT

THE MEDIA CONSORT

At least once in our lifetime, we have been privileged to grab a copy of the Parents Magazine from the many available newsstands and shopping malls countrywide, all thanks to our visionary, one Eunice Njambi Mathu, OGW, the founder and editor-in-chief of Parents Magazine Africa. For close to five decades, Eunice has dedicated her life to helping countless families deal with both nuclear and extended relationships, through granting them solid guidance on the need for peace, love, and unity within the family. This is why she is an inspiration to and for us all, and also the reason why she is an honorary in this segment of black history month.

Eunice Mathu is popularly known within the media fraternity, as a journalist, a writer, as well as the mastermind behind Parents Africa, the most popular and longest running print magazine in Kenya. Yet, long before Eunice established the famous magazine, she was an employee tasked with the work of developing the Consumer Digest, a cooperate magazine for the East Africa Industries, now known as Unilever Kenya. It was from this creation that she decided to build her now renowned publication, of which the first print publication was in July of 1986. Even though Eunice had a lucrative job that would have lasted her well into retirement, she instead found the courage to follow after her dreams, by resigning from her job that ensured a monthly stipend, in order to turn her aspirations into reality. I believe that it only takes one courageous move, an act of bravery, and faith in the unseen, to follow your dream wherever it takes you. Hence, Eunice followed her purpose, thereby transforming it into a legacy.

As a result, Parents Magazine has been commercialized in every vicinity. Make a trip to any reception, beauty parlour, or lounge, and I bet you that a copy of Parents Magazine will be plastered upon coffee tables or popping off the display shelves in many executive offices across the nation. It does not even matter how old the Parents issue is but as long as it is a super brand, it will have many pick it up for a long read, either out of familiarity or habit. Moreover, the notable magazine has a new print every month, and also available on e-paper. Although the digital age has made it easier to access information at our fingertips, I prefer to read the magazine in hard cover, perusing the new crispy pages, admiring the colourful images but mostly, reading the various well-researched articles inscribed by experienced writers.

But what is the magazine all about? To sum it up, the publication centres on the importance of the family unit. At the time of its commencement, there was a vacuum in that there was not readily available information on matters of building solid foundations for lasting relationships. Therefore, Eunice took it upon herself to bridge the gap, by bringing on board knowledgeable minds, to write on topical issues that touched on the family unit, and more so focused on the parents. Moreover, this mainstream magazine was the first in the nation to discuss sexual topics, at a time when such discourses were deemed as taboo and therefore not suitable for public consumption. Nonetheless, the magazine was majorly embraced with every print, as many of its readers were keen on absorbing the available information for their own use, as well as for their own good.

The magazine is still on print and even now available on newsstands near your locality, therefore grab a copy when you can. Since the establishment of the Parents Magazine, Eunice has been hard at work for thirty six years, faithfully playing the role of an editor, one who is keen on educating, informing and transforming the lives of the general public. Additionally, Eunice adorns many hats, with many foundations under her belt, inclusive of the following organizations, of which she is the founder member, namely; Bodywise Fitness, the Kenya Women Finance Trust, the Public Relations Society of Kenya, and the Media Owners Association among others. Eunice is not set on retiring anytime soon, with her tight schedule, numerous responsibilities, coupled with futuristic endeavours, and perhaps other pending inventions at the back burner. Who knows?

Lastly, I am fully persuaded that Eunice Mathu has drunk from the fountain of youth, aging gracefully, and looking as if her ticker is set on backwards, and as if she is Sixty, going onto fourty. I also need some of that magic portion, in order to freeze at least fifteen years off me, by reducing the sagging, deleting visible wrinkles, upgrading my hair and makeup, and switching up my entire wardrobe. Unfortunately, the gym will not do for me though, as I am sedentary and anti-exercise. All in all, Eunice look like she has not aged a day after her fortieth birthday, a gift she can thank her lucky stars for.

Here is to Eunice Njambi Mathu; thank you for taking a chance to live out your dreams, risking your whole life in pursuit of your purpose, imparting wisdom on us, and thereby improving our family lives. For this reason, we will be forever grateful to you.

HUMPHREY KAYANGE; THE RUGBY GURU

 THE RUGBY GURU

I may not know much about the rugby sport but I know enough about our very talented Humphrey Kayange, OGW, OLY who is very much affiliated with the rugby sport, and who always hoists the Kenyan flag way up high, in his quest to gift us with both local and international rugby championships. Humphrey is a decorated sportsman in Kenya, of whom we are celebrate on this black history month.

One Humphrey Kayange is synonymous with rugby and has been playing the sport for two consecutive decades, all the way up to his recent retirement. You usually do not expect many people to fold up their thriving careers in their thirties, yet Humphrey has humbly bowed out of the sport, having made this nation proud of his many achievements, working with the Kenya national rugby sevens team. Being a legend in the sport, a former captain of the Kenyan sevens squad, and also the first Kenyan to be inducted into the World Rugby Hall of Fame, Humphrey makes it look easy to play rugby but truth be told, a lot of passion, stamina and muscle activity is required, in order for this game to be played well. Some of us cannot run track or play ball to save our lives. Instead, we rely on people like Humphrey to win championships, and then ride their coattail, however we can, just to be affiliated somehow with their winning streaks.

Nonetheless, Humphrey does not mind winning for his nation. Infact, this is what motivates him and we are truly proud of him. However, he is not the only one known for playing the sport. Rugby is a family affair, with his younger brothers Collins Injera, and Michael Agevi, both of are who are famously known to have played the sport to stardom. In January of 2023, Humphrey’s brother Collins was inducted in the Fiji Hall of fame, for the achievements in his career, as well as serving as an ambassador for the Coral Coast Sevens.

Although he is retired, I would like to make a humble appeal to Humphrey Kayange by requesting him to consider harnessing this sport for the next generation, through supporting young talent, showing them the ropes to the sport, and teaching them what it takes to become the best in the game, just as he is. I would also like to petition Humphrey on the need to set his sites on becoming a coach and a mentor for the next set of rugby players, who are coming of age into this game, by forming a team of superstars to take on his prowess, long after his moment in the spotlight. I have faith that this move on his part will solidify his legacy the more, should he decide to take on the challenge of growing home talent for the world sevens series title.

This vision is possible for Humphrey Kayange to execute, should the locally known brands be on board, in order to offer sponsorship deals to talented players under the governorship of one Humphery Kayange, although I must say that brands will not hesitate to back him up, should he decide to take on this endeavour, for the sake of home grown talent, and also for the service to the youth of Kenya. Hence, it is really up to him to decide on his next course of action, now that he has retired from the game, however I would plead on behalf of the youth in this nation, who have the dream of playing professional rugby but have no one to lead them towards it, to be taken into consideration, for their future hangs in the balance.

Moreover, if Humphrey Kayange could seek and draw out the underprivileged youth of Kenya, especially those that are somewhat invisible and sitting on raw talent, those diamonds in the ruff, dwelling in the slum areas within the urban communes, by extending to them a golden opportunity and thereby turning their lives around, then that would be a win for him and for God too.

Need I say that a Humphrey Kayange Rugby School will not be a far-fetched futuristic idea, incase he is thinking of his next game plan. Moreover, in the interest of spotting talent, I have a few young names I would gladly push up by you sir, whenever you are ready to help the juniors out. But do not take too long, as they are fast growing into full adulthood. I am curious though, do girls play rugby? Let me know whether you can recruit them too into The Humphrey Kayange Rugby School.

Here is to you Humphrey; as God has been generous with you, and given you the gift of sport, so also be kind enough to share this gift with them that need your light and your guide.

LEONARD MAMBO MBOTELA; THE VETERAN RADIO HOST

LEONARD MAMBO MBOTELA; THE VETERAN RADIO HOST

One of Kenya’s distinct voice, spanning decades on radio, with much accreditation is that of one Leonard Mambo Mbotela, who has been in our ears since the sixties, with a successful career that spans for more than five decades, entertaining us with great sports, music, while inspiring us to be better human beings in the same breath. Being antiquated and still being able to work nonstop, giving us the same dose of advise, with a sharp wit and an intended finesse. It is no wonder that this great Kenyan deserves to be commemorated as a great role model on this Kenyan-based segment of black history month.

Leonard is known nationwide for being a cut-throat radio host, with his signature husky voice, having earned his stripes and the right to counsel the populace on the need to be better human beings, while they interact with everyday people. Leonard may be elderly but his wit and strength have not dwindled one bit. He still spits wisdom on to the minds of people of Kenya, like he did in the sixties, and not about to call it quits. Even the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation is not about to part ways with Leonard, for he has served the media station for decades on end, that I almost believe they have trademarked Leonard as part of their brand. But can you really fault them? Leonard is their golden goose, that generates thousands of viewers and listeners across Kenya and beyond.

His mastery of Kiswahili makes it the more interesting to listen to, while he unfolds eccentric stories of men and women who he puts on blast, by cautioning them of the need to style up and ditch their barbaric ways. Even though Kenyans are known speakers of Kiswahili language, we struggle with its fluency, mixing English and our native tribes into it, to damage it the more. Name a Kenyan beside Leonard, who is flawless in the Kiswahili language, and I will predict their county of origin, with great accuracy. Most of us would argue and say that one Leonard is from the coast of Kenya, hence his mastery of the language, and you are absolutely right to say so. God knows that many of us struggle to speak Kiswahili, despite our learning it in school. Still, English always take the centre stage in our numerous conversations. Hence, the saying is true that Kiswahili was born and raised in Tanzania, went in search for greener pastures in Kenya, fell sick in Uganda, and died in the DRC Congo. But I swiftly digress.

It is all about becoming a decent human being with Leonard. It is all he cares to talk about these days, that makes you conclude that Leonard is man who was raised right, values solid relationships, and who cares more about the moral ethics of proper etiquette, values, and decency, more so when it comes to relationships, and caring connections. Which means that he does right by his relations, if he bothers much to teach us on how to be a friend, a lover, a parent, a sibling, an employer or employee. There is not much that has not been discussed by Leonard on his hit show, “Je, huu ni ungwana?” that loosely translates to “I ask, is this civilized or cultured?” Leonard can do the show in his sleep, having done it numerous times and recorded many topics that become seasoned with every decade.

The most interesting part of his folk tales is that they are not redundant, for he comes with a freshly drama-filled narrative, every time he hosts the show. As a kid growing up in the eighties, the popular show was scheduled for every Sunday afternoon, immediately after church service, when many are rushing back home, to have their late lunch. While they sit to eat, listening to the only radio station at the time, then boom comes Leonard on radio, picking something clever as his discourse for the day, to challenge Kenyans to always act right and behave in ways that are decent.

Aside from his famous radio show, Leonard is highly sort after by different brands for infomercials, thanks his husky voice, which for years has had him sitting pretty on his gold coins. Nevertheless, he has archived a lot of information that generations to come will be privy to and appreciate his great service to this nation. Leonard is a noble man, known to be humble and living a quiet life, under the radar of celebrity lifestyle. Besides, he is not keen on fame and also not given to much public attention. Yet, one this for sure is that Leonard Mambo Mbotela will live on in our hearts and minds for future generations to come.

Here is to you Leonard Mambo Mbotela; you came into our lives yesterday, you touched our hearts and minds today, and made our future a better tomorrow. For this reason, we will be forever grateful.

MARTHA WANGARI KARUA; THE IRON LADY

THE IRON LADY

When I sat down to write this piece, I was of a sober mind, on what I felt I needed to mediate about this great Kenyan personality, who we all know and admire in equal measure, for this is a make or break moment for me. Therefore stay attuned, as I channel the life and times of one honourable Martha Karua, EGH, SC on this segment of black history month. The honourable Martha Karua reminds me of the late Margaret Thatcher, who was once the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, deemed to be bold, fierce, tough as nails and strong as iron. When it comes to being fearless and unapologetic, this lady is solid gold, as Martha is not the type to mince her words nor is she known to be a people pleaser. What you see is what you get, with Martha, so you best take it or leave it, is the energy that Martha emits.

Martha is also a force to reckon with. She is a long established member of parliament for Gichugu Constituency, an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya, was once the Minister for Justice, and up until recently, she was named as a running mate of the 2022 presidential candidate, making her the first woman in Kenyan history to run for a political ticket of a major political party. This meant that a win for Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya Coalition Party in August 2022, would have made her the first Kenyan woman Deputy President, and the highest ranking woman in the history of Kenya.

This iron lady is out here, big pimping in these politcal streets, moulding history left, right, and centre, making us to feel somewhat jaded from all her achievements and breaking records that we cannot compete with nor compare to. Well, you could argue and say that almost does not count, if there is no actual win but when historians gather to write on the life and times of Martha Karua, they will not skip on the fact that she is a star, on the count of her service to the people of the republic of Kenya.

Moreover, Martha is alpha-charged, not afraid to get in the mud, not afraid to take the bull by the horns, and not afraid to fight for what she believes. You can say what you want about Martha but trust her not to care about your distorted opinions of her, for she is who she is and that is that. Furthermore, Martha is aware of her self-worth. She understands that it takes more than pretty face and a coca cola bottle shape to slay the beast. She is well aware that wits and smarts get one further down the path to success, something that she values within herself. But perhaps what Martha values the most is her faith in God, to carry her to rich fulfilment.

This kind of a strong-willed mentality in a woman intimidates even the strongest of men, for they misconstrue her strength to be a act of defiance or rebellion against the already prejudice patriarchal society. On the contrary, Martha is submissive to her God, respectful to the men that raised her, and equally as dutiful to her peers, of whom she merits and admires. Nevertheless, she refuses to be accommodating to anything or anyone who does not impact her life for the better, and that is just sheer common sense. Therefore, you that is in habit of disliking and disregarding strong-minded individuals, should not be overly judgemental of folks, especially those that exude confidence, which you always mistakenly gauge as arrogance. Instead, go within and engage yourself in some shadow work, in order to find the same confidence within, that will drive you to be your very best.

Anyway, Martha has consistently fought for the protection women’s rights and improvements to the democratic process. Moreover, she has been an activist for the widening of democratic space and gender issues in Kenya. Martha has also been involved in championing women’s rights through public interest, litigation, lobbying and advocacy for laws that enhance and protect the rights of women, through her work with the various organizations that champion the rights of women, such as the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA-Kenya), and the League of Kenya Women Voters, among others.

In conclusion, Martha Karua is a born and bred Kenyan made lawyer, politician, and an advocate for human rights. She has proven herself to be a contender in matters of service to the people of Kenya, showcasing her leadership skills and abilities in an effort to build an equal and corruption free nation, based on the Nyayo philosophy of peace, love, and unity.

Here is to you, Honourable Martha Wangari Karua; as iron sharpens iron, as deep calls to deep, and as soul vibes with soul, so let your life be at one with our lives, your dream be in sync with our dreams, and your legacy be our legacy.

DANIEL NDAMBUKI; THE COMIC BRILLIANCE OF CHURCHILL

THE COMIC BRILLIANCE OF CHURCHILL

This funny man is no stranger to the Kenyan populace. The man Daniel Ndambuki, also known as Churchill, has been rib-cracking his way into the hearts and minds of many, with his hilarious jokes, comedy sketches, to having us hooked every week, on his syndicated television show. The man is not only humorous but knows how to profit out of it, while inspiring his mentees to carve a niche for themselves within the comedy industry. It is for this reason that we endeavour to celebrate this chuckle some icon on this black history month.

Granted that there are people born without a funny bone, and therefore do not get to see humour in the jest performed by others but trust one Churchill to prescribe the correct medication for such a people. None can honestly say that they do not find Ndambuki to be an amusing person, because he most definitely is, and he does it with such ease. I mean, the jokes come flying out of his mouth with an intentional wit that you would think he memorized them. Yet, it is the gift he possesses that has opened golden doors of opportunity beyond his wildest dreams.

Those Redykyulass Show days formed a solid foundation for this rib-cracker, when he teamed up with his predecessors, who also happen to be comedic legends including; Walter Mongare (Nyambane), John Kiarie (KJ), Anthony Njuguna, Maurice Otieno (Mudomo Baggy), and Peter Kaimenyi (Kajairo), to create a phenomenal show, which had Kenyans cracking up in laughter for days. This is the comedic root of Daniel Ndambuki, whose story cannot be written in completion without the above mentioned comedic stars, who gave him a leg up and instituted his come up into the show business.

Red Kona was my favourite show, of which Churchill was one of its creators, partnering up again with the very same heavyweight funny heads from the Redykyulass Show, in order to cure our sorrows momentarily with much laughter. Churchill became so popular that he was headhunted, and landed himself a radio gig at Classic 105 FM, teaming up a pace with the talented radio presenter, Maina Kageni, with whom they co-host the famed morning show, which has since made them a great duo.

Churchill is now a brand and a one stop-shop for everything entertainment, with numerous sub-branches popping out of the same trademark, building people and growing the craft at the same time. Moreover, Mr. Ndambuki produced the Churchill Show, a weekly program that features influential personalities across the socio-political and economic continuum. During the show, the comedian himself engages the biggest names in Kenya and outside, in interviews, combined with his brand of comedy, that makes up for comic brilliance. Besides the popular show, there are sub-creations of the same show comprising of, Churchill Live and Churchill Raw, with live tapings  commonly recorded at the Carnivore restaurant, which make up for sweet entertainment. Moreover, Daniel Ndambuki is the founder of Laugh industry Kenya, a company that supports and sustains the Churchill brand.

Additionally, Daniel Ndambuki has several aliases constituting of, his reputable tag name of Churchill, Mwalimu King’ang’i, as well as Philigona, that were created to entertain his radio audience. But Churchill is the prized code-name, which he typically goes by and identifies with. Nonetheless, why did he nick-name himself as Churchill? I guess he is a fan of Winston Churchill, the former Prime Minister of United Kingdom, or he could love to attend church, or better yet, someone baptised him with the nickname. Who knows? Only he can grant us a clear and precise answer. Still, what I do know for sure is that Daniel Ndambuki as Churchill, is Africa’s funniest comedians, he one of the most influential people in Kenya, and has millions of fans worldwide.

Anyhow, the thing I admire the most about Churchill is his visionary eye, whose keen focus is on growing the next generation of comedians in Kenya and beyond. It is for this reason that Churchill created the Top Comic Show, in order to scout for the youth with comedic talent. I dare say that Churchill is perhaps the only comedic legend to ever grow talent out of his platform, with some of the famous names we currently know and appreciate including, Eric Omondi, Teacher Wanjiku, Professor Hammo, MCA Tricky, Jemutai, and DJ Shitii among many. Churchill is so futuristic in that he is aware of a time in the distant future, during the final curtain call, when he will humbly bow out, to make room for his students to take on the limelight, and shine the more brighter, not willing to leave a vacuum, when he finally exits the comedy stage.

Here is to you Daniel Ndambuki; as you progress towards you dream, know that you have touched the hearts of many and changed the lives of most, by sharing in your dream. As you have done it to the children of men, so shall your children receive the uttermost divine favour beyond the wildest dreams.

KATHERINE KASAVULI; THE TELEVISION SIREN

THE TELEVISION SIREN

A moment of silence for this special soul that recently departed to be with our Lord and Saviour, the late news anchor, Katherine Kasavuli. It was indeed a sad moment when I heard of Katherine’s passing, for when I last saw her, she was in great shape. That is why it came as a shock to imagine of a woman who was a constant on our tele-screens is no longer with us, for she has exited the earth, and gone for good. That is why today, I choose this day to honour this longstanding  television siren, bemoan her passing, give her the flowers she is deserving of, and accord her a befitting send-off, as we celebrate her life on black history month.

It is on record that the late Katherine Kasavuli was the first female news anchor in Kenya, to have previously worked in other television stations, including, The Kenya Broadcasting Corporation, Citizen Television, and the Kenya Television Network. She was a radio continuity announcer for the Voice of Kenya, back in the eighties, now known as The Kenya Broadcasting Corporation, before she transitioned into television, in the same media station. Indeed, she took over our television screens every single day, to read the daily chronicles of contemporary events in verbatim, with her beautiful and soft-spoken demeanour, making it look all the more easy.

Nevertheless, things were not so rosy in the life of this single mother of one. She regretfully recounts of how she had dedicated much of her time to her work, such that she was not able to give her dear son the quality time he needed in his childhood, being the breadwinner, and having to spend more time in studio, anchoring news for Kenyans at large. Unfortunately, this is the plight of a single mother, the late Katherine had struggled with, whereby one acts like both the father and mother, and also where one makes the ultimate sacrifice of choosing the greater of the evils, fending for the family, at the expense of spending time to raise her children, where she is forced to hire a caretaker, who would help in raising the kids instead. This is the predicament of a single mother I am all too familiar with but that is a story I will unfold for you all, in the days to come.

The late Katherine Kasavuli was a mainstay in our television screens for years on end, having steered news on our local media stations for decades nonstop, and setting an exceptional example for the next generation of news anchors. Granted that she had years of experience in channelling news, yet she had no mentor to guide her through the ropes. Thus, being the first in anchorage, she had to wing it to success.

As a matter of fact, I accredit the late Katherine Kasavuli for instituting fashion into the world of local news casting. From the flawless hair and makeup, to the eccentric wardrobe of clothes and shoes, Katherine the beautiful was slaying with every passing breath, mixing it all up and giving us glamorous looks every single day. Since her broadcasting days, many of television personalities have followed suit, keeping the latest style and fashion trends, kicking it up a notch higher, and giving the late television queen a run for her money, all in good faith. In a word, I dare say that Katherine Kasavuli was and still is the original queen bee of television glam in Kenya.

The late Katherine Kasavuli was no ordinary person. She best fit the idiomatic expression that still waters run deep, having to work as hard as she did, with a smile on her face, as well as challenging people, places, and things, to get to the top of her game. Moreover, she had to battle silently with the monstrous  cancer, a fight that corrodes flesh, delays progress, consumes a chunk of resources, and ultimately takes out the lives its owners. Her battle with cancer is a reminder to us all, that we should first thank God for our health everyday, secondly, ensure to have annual screen tests for cancer, in order to rule out all the possibilities of carrying the disease, and thirdly, we should always live our today, like there is no tomorrow.

Katherine may not have had a fighting chance with the cancerous disease, despite her battling it up to the end. Life happens to even the best of us, who are deemed to be invincible. Perhaps her time had come, and God was impatiently waiting on His child, to grant her the eternal rest she was well worthy of. What else is there to say?
